For a company to derive maximum benefits from innovation
it is essential that senior managers ensure that the entire organisation,
every one aspect of it, is aligned to innovation.
The starting points for a company’s innovation journey are its
vision and strategy. These are realised through processes and leadership
style which both need to be embedded in the company’s culture.
Processes, including new product development, human resources, tools
and technology, market monitoring, communication and measurement,
need to be designed to support the innovation ambition.
However, not every company will aspire to the same levels in innovation
performance. Each company needs to define its own innovation ambition
and how much effort it wants to dedicate to different categories of
innovation. This then needs to be reflected in the structures, procedures
and so on, a company puts in place.
While good processes are important in facilitating innovation, it
is infinitely more important to encourage the right behaviours to
go with them. A new product development process can be used as a bureaucratic
instrument that slows down the development of a new product or service,
or it can be use as a guideline that helps people steer through the
process and ensure that decisions are made and the right people are
involved at appropriate points in time. The physical work environment
can play an important role in encouraging the right kinds of behaviour. |
