There are a number of different ways
how the Innovation Wave® can be used,
below the most common one is outlined
The questions have been designed in a way that allows managers
to investigate innovation at 4 levels of their organisation:
|

| Headquarters
Operating Company
Department
Team
|
We suggest that you start the use of the Innovation
Wave® with a group of senior managers as this will help
to:
|

|
Create a shared understanding of current innovation
performance
Establish or clarify the organisation’s innovation ambition
Decide on the unit of analysis, i.e. at what level in the organisation
do we need to understand barriers to improving our innovation
performance - team, department, operating company or headquarters
|
As a second step it is suggested
to roll it out with the identified participants/ the agreed
part of the organisation; some thoughts to consider:
|

|
If there is a perceived block that
prevents innovation projects from moving smoothly through departments,
then involving people across all departments involved in the
development chain is most likely to identify bottlenecks
If the block to improving innovation performance is more likely to lie
within a certain layer of the company’s hierarchy, involving people
from those layers will be most effective
Of course, often it will not be clear where the block to innovation
is, in that case it is advisable to start with a sample that
is most likely to offer differing view on innovation performance
and ambition, and include more people horizontally or vertically,
depending on where innovation blocks start to emerge
Assurance of confidentiality is essential if the results are
to be trusted
Managers may want to consider asking customers, suppliers and
collaboration partners to get involved; their insights can be
particularly valuable in assessing Industry Context and Innovation
